  Formula Fashion Launches at Silverstone

Five talented artist/designers from across the UK produced a range of pieces drawing inspiration from Northamptonshire’s traditional leather industry, racing suits, sportswear and accessories.

Formula Fashion’s results were inspirational and wide ranging from shoes inspired by racing cars to striking leather dresses and a man’s jacket to a ‘transmorphic’ outfit.

The project, which received more than £39,000 of National Lottery funding from Arts Council England, went on display at Silverstone Circuit earlier this month. It is also part of the Igniting Ambition festival 2011, part of the Cultural Olympiad.

The artists involved are:

Northampton based Aasen Stephenson who has produced a man’s jacket using locally sourced goat leather and traditional hand-cutting techniques. Aasen will demonstrate this technique during the events at Silverstone, allowing the public to see this intricate way of working first hand.
Garment and accessory designer Jo Cope (based in Leicester) has taken a conceptual approach creating a wonderful Ducati yellow ‘transmorphic’ outfit, which turns into body protection when the wearer adopts the position of a driver. A dress becomes a racing car, a racing car becomes a dress?

Kei Ito, an internationally recognised textile artist (based in London), has just completed working on the Royal wedding dress which Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen produced in May 2011. She creates intriguing conjoined leather dresses.
Critically acclaimed shoe designer Marloes Ten Bh?mer has developed a bespoke woman’s shoe that explores and encapsulates the unique processes and aesthetics that result from recent developments in the engineering of motor vehicles

Genevieve Bennett has developed a technique using a laser-etched line to remove the surface of the leather giving a subtle engraved effect on a large wall hung panel. This technique can be controlled perfectly to create extremely precise and clean lines of any thickness, from a hair-width to several inches in diameter. She has taken the unique shape of the circuit at Silverstone and developed a simple yet familiar linear artwork.

The exhibition will be touring to:

Silverstone Circuit, Northamptonshire – 22 -24 July
The University of Northampton – 22 August – 5 September
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery – 8-21 September
The HUB, National Centre for Craft & Design. Sleaford, Lincolnshire – 24 September – 6 November
