The peoples verdict: errant shoe to get firm strap
The nation has been on tenterhooks, but, finally all can be revealed.
It seems the people have spoken and told shoemaker Midas that the revamped prime ministerial shoe they want is the one with the Mary-Jane strap, not the one with the ankle strap.
It was a vote of national import that now means the Melbourne shoemaker can get to work and put the new design on the production line in time for inclusion in its winter collection.
Midas marketing manager Greg Parmenter said 1285 votes were cast with 712 votes putting the winning Gillard Mark II design over the line.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard lost her blue suede Midas shoe in the Glorify design during her dramatic Australia Day exit from The Lobby restaurant.
The label redesigned the shoe to include a strap to ensure it didn't come off in future.
Mr Parmenter said the new shoe would be called Gillard.
''It was going to be the Julia but we've gone with Gillard to be consistent with our naming policy. G for Glorify, G for Gillard,'' he said.
And as the Midas website notes, ''Hasn't it all be a bit of fun?''
